He swore he would never play seniors tennis or do TV commentary, so why has the American gone back on his word?

John McEnroe was the only good thing about tennis, he’s what got me into it, and while I stuck around for a decade or so after he left, following the leftovers from his era, I pretty much lost my passion for it. When Edberg left, I tapered off, following only the occasional grand-slam final, and then quit completely at the end of the Sampras Career.

When, a couple years back I moved into an apartment complex with actual tennis courts you couldn’t have paid me to go out there. Federer and tennis now bore me worse than cricket or baseball. Here we have one of the few athletes whose careers, whose victories and defeats, we actually cared about. He took no shit, played hard, and cursed, how could you not love that?
